Karl Marx, Kapitalet, first Swedish translation

Rickard Sandler (1884-1964) was a young Swedish teacher who became member of the board of the Social Democratic Party in 1911. In 1912, the party asked him to translate “Das Kapital” in Swedish. But as he became editor in chief of the party newspaper “Ny Tid” and member of the government, the first part appeared only in 1930, the last in 1932. According to Jonas Enander (”Kapitalet på svenska på nytt”, in: ”Clarté, 4/2013), the “Red Banker" Olof Aschberg donated 6000 krona to the project.
In order to make the work available to workers with low income, the Tidens Förlag first serialized it in small booklets. “The entire work will cover 35 booklets with 64 pages for 1,25 krona and the publication is done with two booklets a month. Subscription can be made in every bookshop, through our commissioners or directly from the Tidens Förlag”, the publisher announced in the first booklet. Finally, the work was completely published in 33 booklets.
Sandler's translation was from Engels's fourth German edition, but he had also read Karl Kautsky's “Volksausgabe” and the French translation of “Das Kapital”. At the end of the translation, he wished his translation had greater uniformity and was less literal.
